About Sylvia
I'm a native Texan originally from Corpus Christi and now living in Katy with my family ~ my oil/gas attorney husband, 3 precious dogs (pomeranian, 2 yorkies), a retired school diagnostician uncle, and a daughter who's away at college that comes homes as often as possible to visit (which I love)! I graduated from The University of Texas (at Austin) with a degree in Psychology and Dance where I enhanced my love for the visual and performing arts. After college, I had a fulfilling career in nonprofit management, corporate marketing and community relations. When my daughter was born, I took a permanent sabbatical from working outside the home and became a fulltime momma. Taking a break from the fast track, I now had the time to nurture my art interests by taking classes and eventually became a full-time artist owning my own art gallery in Katy's historical district. A few years ago when I was in search of jewelry artists to exhibit at my place, it was difficult to find the perfect art jewelry that inspired me so I stepped outside my comfort zone and learned to make jewelry! I've been learning and enhancing ever since. Several months ago I wanted to do less marketing-other-artists and concentrate more on nurturing my own artwork, and sold my art gallery. I now work out of my home studio and create art that I sell on my website and at shows ~ totally loving my new freedom! I enjoy my collaboration projects with artist friends, particularly with Susan Urband who's a fabulous jewelry artist and an awesome friend. We share a booth together in Warrenton (Campbell Building) at the huge Warrenton-Round Top Antique & Art Festival that takes place twice annually.
My love for angels is truly what started me in the business of "arting". Twenty years ago, a close friend who's an adoption counselor was hosting a large angel-themed banquet for her foster parents and needed place cards for each guest. She hired me to create them and essentially gave me my first art job! The rest is history.
Since I was a young child, my mom and uncle collected angels before collecting angels was popular. As I grew older, my appreciation for angels grew too. I realized that I truly had angels caring for me when I'd been stricken with polio during the 1950's epidemic miraculously recovering with a slight case ~ when so many people had been permanently paralyzed. I'm forever grateful ... stemming initially from the stamina & impatience of my parents that kept on searching for answers after me constantly being misdiagnosed to my observant grandfather who'd read in his Spanish daily newspaper a story of the town doctor's toddler daughter's bout with polio and urging my parents to take me to see him. As it turned out, both of us toddlers contracted polio immediately after the live vaccine was injected in us. The Salk vaccine hadn't been in existence but for a few years and there were still some glitches to work out. Too much of a dose was injected to many of us toddlers than what our little bodies could handle. Dr. Joseph medicated me exactly the way the big-city San Antonio doctors helped his daughter. With his know-how and with my physical therapy that followed, I ended up very fortunate. Many years later while in college and a newlywed, I was involved in a tragic car wreck caused by a drunk driver that resulted in the death of my young husband. I miraculously survived. Again. There are no coincidences. There's no doubt that unknowingly I've always left a little room for my guardian angels to stop in for tea as they watch over me.
Being an artist painting whimsical angels on prints & cards and creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, has been a beautiful journey. I'll never be done learning and will always be experimenting and creating. My angel designs are light-hearted, fun, colorful soulful ~ and even inspirational ~ though I paint them wearing high heels, boots, sporting big Texas hair, and popping wheelies in their wheelchairs! My jewelry art is just as meaningful to me, particularly when I incorporate religious medallions, crosses, and vintage rosaries. My intricate bead weaving style makes for the eclectic jewelry that I've always admired and loved wearing!
My art theme is Angels, Hearts, Crosses. My mission is to be inspirational and create meaningful art. I hope my work makes your heart smile, as it does mine. Thank you for visiting my website. If you happen to be near one of my shows, please stop by ~ I'd love to meet you.
